Who is Kangana Ranaut?


Kangana Ranaut is an Indian actress and filmmaker who works in Hindi films. The recipient of several awards, including three National Film Awards and four Filmfare Awards, she has featured six times in Forbes India's Celebrity 100 list. In 2020, the Government of India honoured her with the Padma Shri, the country's fourth highest civilian award. Kangana is often credited in the media as one of the most fashionable and controversial celebrities in India. 


Early life and Background

Kangan Ranaut was born in a joint Rajput family. She lives with her parents and one elder sister and younger brother in their ancestral haveli in Bhambla Himachal Pradesh. Her father is a businessman and her mother is a school teacher. She described her childhood as happy and simple but she was very stubborn and rebellious while growing up. Kangana starts experimenting with fashion from a very young age and she often dressed in clothes that would seem bizarre to her family and neighbours. She attended DAV School in Chandigarh and initially wanted to become a doctor on the insistence of her family. However after a failed unit test in chemistry during her 12th standard, she has to reconsider her career options and despite preparing for the All India Pre Medical Test, she did not turn up for the exam. Her decision not to pursue medical line led to constant fighting with her parents, so only at the age of 16, she determined to find her freedom and space she decided to move to Delhi. In the early days of her, Delhi stays she was unsure of her career option. She took some modelling assignments but don’t consider it as a long time career due to no scope of creativity in it. Kangana decided to shift her focus to acting and joined Asmita Theatre Group in Delhi. After getting positive response for her performances in plays she decided to shift to Mumbai to pursue her acting career in movies. In Mumbai, she enrolled herself in a 4 months acting course in Asha Chandra Drama School. In her early days in Mumbai, Kangana struggle financially and sometimes only eat bread with aachar. Her family and relatives are unhappy with her decision to enter Bollywood and they did not in contact with her until the release of her movie Life in a Metro in 2007.

The struggle story of Kangana Ranaut is unlike anyone else. Kangana Ranaut is popular in the industry because of her unconventional lifestyle and rebellious nature. She is one actress who has established her amazing acting skills and talent by giving her 100% efforts in her performance. Her most famous films are Queen, Tanu Weds Manu Series, Gangster, etc. It took some time but she is a very successful actress. Success did not come to her easily. As she struggled a lot to reach this point. Her story is very inspirational as well as motivational. In the beginning, she tried modeling but later realized that modeling was not her thing. Ultimately she moved to Mumbai to pursue her career as an actress. She struggled for 10 years before her Bollywood debut. There was a point in her career when she was financially very weak. However, being the courageous and rebellious woman she is, she did not give up. Finally in 2004, after 10 years of struggle, she got her first Bollywood project “I Love You Boss”. In the following year, she also auditioned for a film directed by Anurag Basu and produced by Mahesh Bhatt. Anurag Basu liked her audition a lot and wanted to get her in the film but Mahesh Bhatt did not agree. He stated that she is very young to handle such a demanding and hard role. So, they signed a more established actress over Kangana. However, at the very last moment, that actress walked out of the movie leaving Mahesh Bhatt and Anurag Basu in no other position but to sign Kangana Ranaut as her replacement. Kangana dropped “I Love You Boss” to do this film. She showed everyone that she was rightfully deserving of the role through her performance. The film was “Gangster”. As you may know, this movie was a hit in the box office and it also impressed the critiques. Kangana received a lot of praise for her performance in the movie. After “Gangster”, Kangana did some more films. However, not all of them got a good response from the audience except for the “Tanu Weds Manu Series”. Her Bollywood career got stagnated in the middle. Suddenly, all this changed with “Queen”. The audience loved this film and loved the performance of Kangana in it. . She received two consecutive National Film Award for Best Actress for “The Queen”. Kangana told in an interview that “Queen” was the turning point in her Bollywood career. This film also changed a lot of people’s perception of her and her capabilities. Now, Kangana is also conquering the business world with her recent collaboration with Brand “Vero Moda” to launch two clothing lines for the company. She also tried her luck as a director as she co-directed and acted in a biopic called “Manikarana – The Queen Of Jhansi”. Along with all these, Kangana has also been in the center of a lot of controversies. Her rebellious and outspoken personality always brings her to the center of controversies. However, that does not stop her from keep speaking up for herself. From leaving her house at the age of 16 all by herself without any financial support to getting National Film Awards, Kangana had to face a lot of struggles and obstacles in her way. In 2005 Kangana signed Gangster movie which was released in 2006, the movie emerged as a critical and commercial hit and her performance was praised everywhere. She got many awards for her role including Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. After establishing a reputation for portraying powerful neurotic characters, Kangana started to seek projects that would be less emotionally exhausting for her. In 2011 Kangana stars in Tanu Weds Manu, a romantic comedy movie opposite R. Madhavan, which is considered as a game-changer for her acting career. The movie is a commercial success and Kangana performance was praised all over. She got best actress award at Screen and Zee Cine Awards for her role of Tanu in the movie. After the success of Tanu Weds Manu, Kangana work in 4 other movies in the next 2 years, Rascals, Game, Double Dhamaal and Miley Naa Miley Hum. Only Double Dhamaal performs well on box office. 


Established Actress

In 2013 Kangana Ranaut stars in Krrish 3 opp Hrithik Roshan as a shapeshifting mutant Kaya. This movie is a big hit and becomes Kangana`s most profitable venture until that time. In early 2014, Kangana Ranaut established herself as one of the lead actresses in the Indian Film Industry. She featured alongside with Rajkummar Rao and Lisa Haydon in a comedy-drama movie – Queen. It is a story of a young girl named Rani, who went on her honeymoon alone after her fiancé calls off their wedding. The movie and Kangana’s performance was critically acclaimed and the film was a big commercial hit. That year she won both the National Film Award and Filmfare Award for the best actress for this movie. The following year in 2015, Kangana Ranaut starred in Tanu Weds Manu Returns a sequel to Tanu Weds Manu. In the movie, she portrayed double roles, the character of Tanuja from the original and she also portray the role of Kusum, an aspiring athlete in it. The film received positive reviews from critics and everyone praise Kangana`s performance. The movie becomes a big box office hit and becomes one of the highest-grossing Bollywood films of all time. For her powerful performance in the movie, Kangana won second National Award for Best Actress and she also won Filmfare Critics Award. 


Controversies, Setback and Professional Expansion

After a yearlong absence from the big screen, Kangana Ranaut starred as Julia in Vishal Bhardwaj’s period war drama movie Rangoon opposite Shahid Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan. The movie got mixed reviews and was one of the biggest flops of 2017 but Kangana’s performance was praised. In 2019, Kangana Ranaut starred in Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi, a biopic of the brave Indian freedom fighter Rani of Jhansi, she also co-director this movie. The movie performed moderately well at the box office and Kangana received Filmfare Award nominations for her performances in the film. In 2020 Kangana works in a sports film Panga opposite Jassi Gill, in the movie, she played the role of a young mother and homemaker who trains to stage a comeback in kabaddi. Despite having a good subject the movie did not perform well at the box office. Kangana Ranaut`s upcoming movies are trilingual biopic named Thalaivi, in which she will portray the role politician Jayalalithaa and an upcoming action movie named Dhaakad. 


Personal Life

During her struggling days, Kangana Ranaut got support from Aditya Pancholi and his wife Zarina Wahab and she considered them her family away from home. In 2007 Kangana Ranaut had filed a police complaint against Aditya Pancholi for physically assaulting her under the influence of alcohol. While filming Raaz: The Mystery Continues in 2008 Kangana began a romantic relationship with her co-star Adhyayan Suman but in the following, they parted ways to focus on their professional careers. In many interviews, Kangana has expressed her desire to not be bound by a relationship and says she will never get married. A practising Hindu, Kangana Ranaut lives in Mumbai with her sister Rangoli. Kangana follows the teachings of Swami Vivekananda and considers meditation to be the highest form of worshipping God. She is vegetarian and in 2013 listed as India’s hottest vegetarian in a poll conducted by PETA. Kangana Ranaut is known as a free-spirited, creative person who cannot be slotted in a particular mould. Kangana is also known for her forthrightness in expressing her opinions in public on issues ranging from feminism to films.
